KUNG FU TAP & TACO

Des Moines, IA is home to a divey, Moto-friendly bar known as “the FU” to locals, or FTWco’s Kung Fu Tap & Taco to the rest of the world. Opening its doors for business in 2005, the Fu has enough decor/history on the walls and friendly faces of all ages sitting on the tree stump bar stools to keep you entertained all afternoon.
- If the signs a glowin’ the beers are flowin’!
- Details are everywhere in this tiny dive.
“Every Night is Bike Night” seems to be the common theme amongst bar goers, some who visit daily, others who stop by on busier nights when advertised events are in order. Nonetheless, nobody can deny the obvious passion for anything two wheels that the bar itself advertises.
- The atmosphere of Kung Fu Taco is summarized by this booth. Chill Vibes and Cool shit!
- Decorations upon decorations. You could visit the Fu a dozen times and find something new to stare at.
What’s up with the food?
Well, they’ve got $2 pickled eggs, and tacos that are similar to a crunchy beef taco you’d find at a fast food Mexican joint, served up with lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese, a packet of sour cream, and a variety of hot sauces of your choosing. I broke my pickled egg cherry upon visiting this place. I may or may not try one again, but that saves some pickled eggs for the rest of the midwest, where apparently these little boiled beauties are a bar food staple.
- Pickled Eggs are not for everyone, but they make for cool photos when the lighting is right.
- Tacos and Beer, it’s why we’re here!
What’s up with the brews?
They keep them cheap and simple. As the t-shirts hanging on the walls state their beliefs: “Craft Beer Sucks.” Hamms, Coors Light and Heavy, and other common domestic beers are kept icy cold in the fridge, but you won’t find any $6 fancy beer here.
Simple food, simple drinks. What makes this place so great? It’s a down to earth, no frills biker bar. Whether you ride a motorcycle or not, you are welcomed here, as long as you aren’t a douchebag. Have fun with your friends. Share some road stories or learn something about motorcycles by talking to the guy or gal sitting at the bar next to you, or have someone school you at billiards on the pool table. It’s nothing but good times down at the Fu, and that’s how we like it too.
- Why go to Taco Bell with you can get the same thing with better ambience?
- Stumps are for sittin’ and drinkin’ with your friends.
